Hakozaki Shrine

Shinto shrines

筥崎宮

Hakozaki Shrine in Higashi Ward, also called Hakozaki Hachimangu, is counted among Japan’s three great Hachiman shrines with Usa and Iwashimizu. Official history pages name Emperor Ojin as the main deity with Empress Jingu and Tamayorihime, and relate a Heian-period rebuilding after an imperial gift of the phrase “enemy countries surrender.” The shrine is also known for warding off misfortune and victory after the Mongol invasions. Confirm festival dates such as Hojoya and prayer hours before you visit.
