Tochoji Temple is a Buddhist temple in Fukuoka located in the Chikushi region. It was established by Kobo Daishi Kukai as the first sacred site for esoteric Buddhism in Japan. Following his return from China, Kukai landed at Hakata and founded the temple, naming it Tocho-mitsu-ji to signify that esoteric teachings would spread far to the east.
