The Wakamatsu Castle keep, better known as Tsurugajo, is the landmark of the Aizu domain in Aizuwakamatsu. Official history pages trace the site from the 1384 Higashi-Kurokawa mansion through Gamo Ujisato’s 1593 keep—eastern Japan’s first full-scale tenshukaku—and the castle’s endurance during the 1868 Boshin War siege. Buildings were demolished by 1874, the keep rebuilt in 1965, and red roof tiles matching late-Edo appearance restored in 2011. Confirm museum hours and related garden tickets before you visit.
