Sakata City Museum of Art opened on 3 October 1997 on a hill overlooking Mount Chokai, the Mogami River, and the city. Official overview pages highlight architect Yoshio Ikehara’s design, in which the glass entrance and the outdoor sculpture Sho-sei draw the Shonai Plain, Dewa Sanzan, and wide skies into the museum experience.
