Korokan is a national historic site of an Asuka, Nara, and Heian period diplomatic facility that received envoys from China and the Korean Peninsula and lodged Japanese missions such as the kentoshi. Official pages note that similar houses existed in Kyoto and Naniwa, but only the Tsukushi Korokan has confirmed remains as a national site. First recorded in 688 as Tsukushi no murotsumi, it later shifted toward trade before vanishing from records after a 1047 fire. Excavation continues inside Fukuoka Castle grounds; check current visitor information before you go.
