Naminoue Shrine stands on a limestone bluff above the sea in Naha, overlooking Naminoue Beach and the harbor. The cliff was regarded as a sacred place before the shrine took its present form, reflecting Okinawan worship directed toward the lands beyond the sea. The shrine later became recognized as the principal shrine of the former Ryukyu Kingdom and Okinawa.
