Engaru Archaeological Center in Shirataki introduces Japan’s largest obsidian source area and Stone Age tools from sites more than 20000 years old. Official town pages say visitors can see real stone tools and even touch a mammoth tusk in the permanent gallery. Hours are 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Closed Tuesdays and for year-end holidays, with Tuesday holidays moved to the next weekday. Permanent-gallery admission is 320 yen for adults and 160 yen for high-school students and younger. Confirm closed days before you visit.
