Toji Temple

東寺

Toji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Kyoto, formally named Kyo-o-gokoku-ji, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Emperor Saga entrusted it to Kukai in 823, making it a major center for Esoteric Buddhism. Its five-story pagoda, the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan, is a National Treasure and a prominent landmark, while other halls preserve important Buddhist sculptures and ritual art.
