Nijo Castle was built in Kyoto in 1603 for Tokugawa Ieyasu and later became a stage for major events in the history of the shogunate. The Ninomaru Palace, Kara-mon Gate, gardens, and other early Edo-period features survive within the grounds. The castle is a National Historic Site and part of a UNESCO World Heritage property.
