Yasaka Shrine is an ancient shrine in Kyoto that predates the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyo in 794. Affectionately known as Gion-san, it is the head shrine of approximately 2,300 Yasaka and related shrines across Japan. Its principal deity, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, is worshipped for protection from calamity.
