Churui Naumann Elephant Museum in Makubetsu commemorates the rare near-complete Naumann elephant fossils excavated at Churui. Town materials say reconstructed skeletons have been reproduced in 23 casts displayed in Japan and abroad. The building itself is designed to evoke an elephant when viewed from above—dome as body, corner galleries as legs, entrance as head, pebble walls as skin, and a long approach called Toki no Michi as trunk and tusks.
