The Japan Folk Crafts Museum opened in 1936 as the base of the mingei movement planned by Soetsu Yanagi and colleagues from 1926 to promote folk craft beauty in daily life. Official about pages describe a collection of about 17,000 ceramics, textiles, wood and lacquer works, paintings, metalwork, stonework, and basketry from Japan and abroad, with successive directors from Yanagi to Naoto Fukasawa.
