Murin-an in Kyoto's Nanzen-ji area is the Meiji-era villa of statesman Yamagata Aritomo, built from 1894 to 1896 with a garden, main house, Western-style building, and teahouse. Official pages credit the garden to seventh-generation Ogawa Jihei under Yamagata's direction as a masterpiece of modern Japanese garden design, note its 1951 designation as a National Place of Scenic Beauty, year-round opening among neighborhood villas, and the upstairs room of the Murin-an Conference with Ito Hirobumi before the Russo-Japanese War.
