Pontocho Alley

先斗町

Pontocho is a narrow historic alley running between Sanjo and Shijo in central Kyoto, parallel to the Kamo River. Traditional wooden buildings contain restaurants, bars, and establishments connected with Kyoto’s geiko and maiko culture. Lanterns, narrow entrances, and occasional riverside dining platforms preserve a distinctive streetscape, while the alley remains an active dining and entertainment district.
