Osaka Castle developed from the site of Ōsaka Hongan-ji (Ishiyama Hongan-ji). Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a castle there; it later fell during the Siege of Osaka and was rebuilt by the Tokugawa shogunate. The present tower was reconstructed in 1931 and operates as a museum displaying cultural properties related to Hideyoshi, the Sengoku period and Osaka Castle’s history.
