Matsudaira Tōshō-gū

松平東照宮

Matsudaira Tōshō-gū in Matsudaira, Aichi Prefecture, preserves moats and stone walls built after Sekigahara by Matsudaira Shōei of the Tarōzaemon line. Originally a Hachiman household shrine, it enshrined Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1619 and Matsudaira Chiyoshi in 1965. The birth-water well said to have been dug by Ariwara no Nobumori supplied water used for generations at Tokugawa Ieyasu's birth. The adjacent Matsudaira-go Museum displays materials on the Matsudaira clan from 10:00 to 15:00, closed Wednesdays. Shrine prayers are accepted from 9:00 to 16:00 for fees from 5000 yen.
