Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden near Hamamatsucho is a compact Edo-period stroll garden known for bold stone arrangements. Official history traces it to 1678, when Okubo Tadatomo received the land from shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna and created a garden once called Rakujuen; it later became an imperial detached palace and, after the Great Kanto Earthquake, was granted to Tokyo and opened in 1924. The pond was once tidal seawater and is now freshwater, while bridges, islets, and Odawara stonework remain highlights. Hours are generally nine to five with a modest admission fee, so confirm free-admission days and guide walks before visiting.
