Nakagusuku Castle

Nakagusuku Castle ruins are a World Heritage gusuku on Okinawa’s central ridge, also designated a national historic site and one of Japan’s One Hundred Castles. Official history traces stone fortification from the mid-14th century and credits Gosamaru with major expansions in 1440 before the 1458 assault that ended his rule. Visitors come for the curved stone walls that follow natural rock and ridgelines, with multiple baileys and wells still readable on the ground. Reception hours usually run from morning into late afternoon, longer in summer months, and typhoon closures occur, so confirm tickets and notices before climbing the site.
