The Nagamachi Samurai District in Kanazawa preserves streets where retainers of the Kaga Domain once lived. Earthen walls, narrow stone-paved lanes, canals, and former residences create a landscape associated with the castle town’s warrior class. In winter, woven straw mats called komokake are tied over the walls to protect them from snow and frost, adding a distinctive seasonal appearance.
