Kiyomizu-dera is a Buddhist temple founded in 778 on the wooded slopes of eastern Kyoto. Its Main Hall is known for a broad wooden stage projecting over the hillside, supported by a framework of timber pillars. Below it flows the Otowa Waterfall, whose streams have long been part of the temple’s worship. The temple forms part of Kyoto’s UNESCO World Heritage property.
