Kamakura is a coastal city south of Tokyo that served as Japan’s political center under the first shogunate from the late twelfth century. The city contains numerous Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, including the Great Buddha and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, set among wooded hills and historic streets. Beaches and hiking trails connect its cultural sites with the surrounding landscape.
